Srinagar: In the first major encounter, Security forces today shot dead five Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants in Handwara area of Kupwara district.
Acting on specific information a joint team of Handwara Police, 21 RR and 92 Bn CRPF cordoned off Panjwani forests and village Laribal Handwara, spokesman said.
He said, the cordon and search operation ensued into an encounter in which three militants were killed in Panjwani forests and two militants were killed in Peer Mohalla Laribal.
Inspector General of Police S M Sahai told reporters that Abu Bakar was active in North Kashmir from the last 5 years.
”Abu Bakar was a top rank Lashkar commander who was active in North Kashmir from last five years. Today’s encounter is a big achievement for us,” Sahai said.
A top official told Agence India Press, that as the security forces closed in on the militant hideout, the ultras opened firing. The security forces retaliated and in the ensuing gunfight 5 militants were killed.
”Security forces had a tough time as before the commencement of the operation against the militants, all civilians had to be evacuated. No loss of life of any civilian or any soldier has been reported,” he said.
The bodies of all the five militants have been recovered from the encounter sites.
Meanwhile, five AK 47 rifles and 17 AK Magazines were recovered from the slain militants. (AIP News)
