New Delhi: All Parties Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani was Wednesday questioned here for recommending a Pakistani visa for a suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba militant arrested for allegedly plotting a terror attack in the capital, police said.

The 82-year-old Geelani, who was at the Special Cell at Lodhi Road for less than 30 minutes, denied having any knowledge about the links of Athesham Malik with any terror outfit and also Delhi Police told Agence India Press that he used to sign at least 10 to 15 such letters every day.

A laboratory technician, Malik was earlier associated with LeT in Sopore in Jammu and Kashmir and was arrested in 2007 along with two others.

Hurriyat (G) spokesperson Ayaz Akbar had earlier said, “We don’t know about this case. But generally, if any Kashmiri comes to Geelani for recommendation, he gives his recommendation only because they being Kashmiri. But then how can he know why he wants to go there and what his motive is?”

Police earlier found a copy of Geelani’s recommendation letter with Ahtesham Malik, one of the two alleged Lashkar militant arrested in Delhi.

According to police, Malik was in Pakistan last summer. He went on a valid passport — which police said was a new Lashkar strategy of sending recruits from the Kashmir Valley to Pakistan, with legal papers, for “arms and explosives training”.
