Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir government may have made tall claims of achieving developmental work at grass roots level by holding Panchayat elections but the story on ground is totally far from this. Residents of Awoora Kupwara in North Kashmir held a strong protest demonstration against Sarpanch alleging that the Sarpanch of the area in connivance with Block development Officer (BDO) was benefiting selected few through NREGA works and has deprived the job card holders of the 100 days work.
They were demanding action against the erring officials and also the removal of BDO from the area. “Sarpanch and BDO are hand in glove and benefit only few in the area. The job card holders are deprived of the due share of work. Strong action should be taken against both,”
Meanwhile annoyed over the attitude of state government, the elected Panches and Sarpanches of Jammu and Kashmir have threatened to launch a state wide agitation if the Panchayats of the state were not empowered fully at par with Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh states by implementing 73rd amendment of Indian constitution regarding Panchayti Raj, this they announced while addressing a press conference organized by Panches and Sarpanches at Jammu under the banner of Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference. The Panches, Sarpanches organization also warned the state government of dire consequences if any attempt is made to dilute the Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Act 1989 through a bill being drafted by a special committee of legislatures constituted by government regarding the identification of powers of legislatures.
