Srinagar: Life across the Kashmir valley was affected on Saturday due to a shutdown call given by separatists to mark the death anniversary of Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) founder Mohammad Maqbool Bhat Shops, banks and other business and commercial establishments remained closed due to the strike. Transport services were also severely affected with public transport remaining off the roads.

However, private vehicles could be seen plying on the roads in the uptown town areas of Srinagar city. Skeletal traffic was plying on different routes in far-flung areas.

Educational institutions and private offices too remained closed. The attendance in government offices and banks remained affected in wake of the shutdown call. Roads in the Shahr-e-Khaas wore a deserted look and looked like curfew situation.

Heavy deployments of security forces were kept in strength in sensitive areas including Down Town and Maisuma to avoid any untoward incident.

In order to prevent protests and marches by separatists in the city centre areas, preventive restrictions were imposed by the authorities in Lal Chowk.

They had laid the concertina wires on the entry and exit points of Maisuma, Abi Guzar and Regal Chowk to stop the vehicular and pedestrian movement.

However, protests were reported at various places in Srinagar and other parts of the Valley.

Meanwhile, JKLF supporters had started a march on Friday from the party headquarters at Maisuma towards the headquarters of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) in Sonawar area.  The security personnel intercepted them at Budshah Chowk and led clashes.

JKLF founder Maqbool Bhat was hanged to death this day in 1984 at Tihar Jail.  Hurriyat Conference (M), Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Freedom League (JKPFL) have paid glowing tributes Muhammad Maqbool Butt, on his 28th death anniversary. (AIP News)
