Srinagar: Suspected militants killed a ruling National Conference worker in Batamaloo area of Srinagar on Saturday morning at around 9: AM.
Unidentified gunmen fired on Bashir Ahmad Dar son of Mohammad Jamal from point blank injuring him seriously, eye witness told Agence India Press. He was immediately shifted to SMHS hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Immediately after the attack, police and paramilitary men deployed in the area launched a massive combing and search operation in Batamaloo to arrest the culprits responsible for the attack. However, no arrests were reported.
In 1996, Bhat’s father Muhammad Jamal Bhat, a block president of the National Conference, was also killed by separatist guerrillas in the same area.
The area is now being searched by the security forces. No group has so far taken responsibility for the murder.
The killing came days after suspected rebels killed a policeman in an attack on December 11 on state Rural Development Minister Ali Mohammed Sagar, who escaped uninjured.
However, one constable was killed while three others were injured in the attack, which was claimed by Jamiatul Mujahideen outfit. (AIP News)
