Srinagar: Cold wave conditions and dense fog continued unabated in Uttar Pradesh, claiming 13 more lives on Thursday. The death toll in the state hit 74. Kanpur with a minimum temperature of 2.6°C was the coldest.
In south Kashmir, the minimum temperature at the Pahalgam resort plunged to minus 7.4°C. In Gulmarg, the mercury slipped to minus 11.4°C. In Leh district of Ladakh region, the temperature slipped to minus 17.8 and in Kargil mercury plunged to -12.8°C.
In the summer capital Srinagar, the minimum temperature remained below freezing point and was recorded at minus 1.2 degrees Celsius.
The weather is expected to remain dry in the Valley for another day, the MeT official told Agence India Press.
“The minimum temperature fell to the lowest so far this season in Leh town. It was minus 17.8 degrees,” Sonam Lotus, director of the meteorological office added.
Severe cold wave conditions have again started in the valley after a respite Tuesday and Wednesday when the mountains received fresh snowfall and light rain lashed the plains here.
Even though the 40-day long severe winter period known as Chillai Kalan started here Wednesday, locals are disappointed with the absence of snowfall in the plains so far. (AIP News)
