Srinagar: A woman, died and other injured in cross firing during a encounter which started between militants and security forces in Handwara region of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district last night.
A heavily armed group of militants had visited a Bhak in Padlu area in the Upper reaches of Handwara during the intervening night of Monday, where 4-5 families are putting up in a dhok and had demanded food, a police official said here.
“Militants had asked villagers to guide them towards Brinjal and Ghalali areas, which the former resisted and denied, Aghast by the reaction of villagers, militants asked to provide them food for the next following night also,” he said.
The militants left the place on Monday night but were intercepted by Army.
“Militants ran away back towards the dhok, and started indiscriminate firing, which created chaos triggering an gun-battle, In the exchange of firing, two civilians, Saleema, 45, and Abdul Rashid Paswal, 35, received bullet injuries” he said.
SP Handwara told Agence India press “the injured lady Saleema was initially referred to SKIMS-Soura Srinagar, but she succumbed while Paswal is admitted in SDH Handwara and is out of danger.
“Other civilians have been rescued from the area. The gun-battle was still going on when the last reports came in,” he said (AIP).
