Srinagar: Senior separatist leaders were placed under house arrest on Friday ahead of Hurriyat Conference (G)’s call for protests against the custodial death of a youth in Sopore town.
While Hurriyat (G) chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani continued to remain under house arrest for 10th consecutive day at his Hyderpora residence, Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was again placed under house arrest this morning, Shabir Shah of the Democratic Freedom Party and Nayeem Khan, chairman of the National Front and Jammu and Kashmir Salvation Movement Chairman Zaffar Akbar were also confined to their homes.
Geelani had called for protests after the Friday prayers.
Meanwhile, people staged protest in the old city today which result violent clashes broke out against the curbs on the Hurriyat Conference (M) Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq by the government.
Reports reaches to Agence India Press said that soon after the Friday prayers at the Jamia Masjid, Nowhatta youth took out a rally to protest the curbs on the Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. However, security forces, deployed there resorted to cane charge and fired numerous tear gas shells to break up the demonstrations. The protesters were chanting Pro-freedom, Pro-Islam and Pro-Mirwaiz slogans.
Later, protesters hurled stones on the security forces triggering fierce clashes. (AIP)
