Srinagar: Independent legislator, Er. Rasheed along with his supporters was today detained by police in Wangam area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district this afternoon.
Reports reaches to Agence India Press said that Rasheed who was flanked by Sarpanchs and Panchs was on way to Sopore to visit the family of Nazim Rashid was stopped by police near Thokerpora, Wangam.
However eyewitnesses said that Rasheed offered rigid resistance and tried to break the police cordon. “He tried to break the cordon, but the police swung into action and he was detained” an eyewitness told AIP.
When Contacted Rashid he told Agence India Press that “To protest the brutal and cold-blooded murder I was on my way to express sympathy with the family but, police detained me near Thokerpora,” Rashid said adding that the state has been turned into a police state.
Pertinently, Nazim Rashid alias Anjum, son of Abdur Rashid Shalla, was allegedly killed by police in custody on Sunday morning.
Meanwhile in North Kashmir major towns Baramulla and Sopore towns observed a complete shutdown on Monday to mourn the custodial killing of a youth.
Reports said that shops, business establishments, schools and financial institutions remained closed in the twin north Kashmir towns and traffic remained off the roads.
Hundreds of paramilitary CRPF and policemen were deployed in the Sopore town to thwart any protests march.
Meanwhile, separatist leaders including chairmen of both Hurriyat factions Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Shahid-ul-Islam and others continued to remain under house arrest. . (AIP)
