Puttaparthi: Spiritual leader Sathya Sai Baba of Puttaparthi died in hospital on Sunday at 7.40am.
According to Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences health bulletin Baba breathed his last today morning.
He passed away at the age of 85 due to cardio-respiratory failure after spending more than three weeks in critical condition, doctors said.
Thousands of followers massed at the hospital where Sai Baba was being treated in his hometown of Puttaparthi in Anantpur District of Andhra Pradesh, with police using barriers to hold back crowds of mourners.
The body of Sathya Sai Baba will be kept at Prashanti Nilayam at his ashram for two days to enable devotees to have a “last look “(darshan).
According to the statement released by Sathya Sai Central Trust, the body will be kept at Sai Kulwant Hall at 6 pm on Sunday. The body will lie there on Monday and Tuesday.
The trust is silent about the last rites but it is likely to be performed on Wednesday at Prashanti Nilayam with full state honours. The trust has appealed to devotees not to rush to the hospital and have a last glimpse of Baba in an orderly manner.
There has been a complete shutdown in Puttaparthi since morning following reports about deterioration in the condition of Sai Baba.
Sai Baba was hospitalised on March 28 following problems related to heart and respiration. (AIP)
