Jammu: In yet another dimension to railway connectivity in the Jammu and Kashmir state, Udhampur-Katra and Banihal-Qazigund railway sections of the Northern Railways in Jammu and Kashmir would be ready for chugging of trains by December next year.
“Considerable progress has been made on making the Udhampur-Katra and Banihal-Qazigund railway sections operational by December next year,” Northern Railways Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) R K Gupta said here.
However, capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar would be connected via train by 2017 due to the uphill task of constructing world’s highest and longest span bridge over river Chenab.
There are a total of 42 tunnels having a length of 120 kilometers on Udhampur-Qazigund portion and at present 17 of them have been completed while work was apace on remaining ones.
As far as 11 kilometer long tunnel between Qazigund and Banihal is concerned, 10.5 kilometer portion has been completed and remaining is to be finished by September this year, CAO added. (AIP)
