Army captain, militant killed in Kashmir

Srinagar: One militant and an Army captain were killed in a fierce gunbattle in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district of Kashmir, police said.

Police said Army and police cordoned off Model Town Sopore on Tuesday evening and started a search operation in the area. During the search, militants hiding in two houses opened fire on the advancing troops injuring an Army captain.

The injured captain identified as Abhimanyu of 22 Rashtriya Rifles was shifted to Army hospital in Srinagar where he succumbed to his injuries.

The operation against the holed-up militants was suspended as the darkness engulfed the area and was resumed early morning today.

“The operation was halted for the night to avoid collateral damages. It was resumed this morning,” police spokesman told Agence India Press. He said unidentified militant was killed in the gunfight this afternoon.

In the gunfight which resumed this morning a militant whose identity and group affiliation could not be known was killed.

This week militants attacked the residence of Sopore police chief Altaf Khan. Militants on Sunday fired grenades at the Town Hall in Sopore town, which houses a CRPF camp and the residence of the Superintendent of Police Altaf Khan.

Sopore has become a major flashpoint between militants and forces with weekly gunfights between the two sides. Protests erupted in the district after the militant was killed.

Scores of youth came on streets in different areas while defying the restrictions and started pelting stones on police. Police spokesman said “miscreants this morning surfaced in Chan khan, Main town and Bus stand areas of Sopore, resorted to stone pelting on Police and security forces deployments.” Police however exercised maximum restraint to avoid any mishap. “Miscreants were chased away without use of force, and situation in these areas were brought to normal.” he added.

  1. RIP capt Upmanyu Singh thanks to brave men like you India is not another failed state like war torn Afghanistan or Baluchistan we are forever indebted to you for your sacrifice. It is truly a dark day for your buddies from 22RR.

My condolences for the family of the deceased.

It is very unfortunate to note that while our Patriots continue to fall to bullets in Kashmir, Mirwaiz and Gilani who are responsible for fuelling and supporting these terrorists who murder our young soldiers are given CRPF protection while they spread anti-Indian speaches across India.

Look at what was the tribute given to The fallen Capt by the Kashmiri people the staged a protest for the killed Pakistani terrorist pelted stones at security forces and held a grand funeral procession in honor of he Pakistani terrorist who wanted to kill innocent civilians and bomb another Varanasi.

ironic that anti nationals like Umer Farooq and Syed Ali Gilani are given a national platform while our true patriots are discarded abused and forgotten.
