Srinagar: Authorities on Friday imposed curfew in the old city areas of Srinagar and some towns of south and north Kashmir to thwart the proposed ‘Bijbhera Chalo’ by Syed Ali Shah Geelani led hardline Hurriyat which is spearheading ‘Quit Kashmir’ Movement in Indian Kashmir.
Hardline Hurriyat has appealed to the people to march towards South Kashmir’s Bijbhera town where 40 people were killed in the Security Forces firing on the same day 17 years ago.
“Curfew was imposed in old city areas of Srinagar and some towns of south and north Kashmir as a precautionary measure as we didn’t want miscreants to disturb law and order,” a senior police officer told Agence India Press.
Besides Old city of Srinagar, Curfew was imposed in Bijbhera, Anantnag and Shopian towns of south Kashmir and Sopore,Handwara and Kupwara towns of north Kashmir.
Curfew has also been imposed in Bijbehara, Anantnag and Shopian towns in south Kashmir and Sopore, Handwara and Kupwara towns in north Kashmir.
Hurriyat (G) has asked for dozens of marches (Chalo) to various places as part of its ‘Quit Kashmir’ movement, Government on its part clamps down curfew to thwart any attempts of people to march to the proposed areas.
Shops, business establishments, and various government offices remained closed with traffic, private, and public remaining off the roads in most of the areas.
Educational institutes and banks, however, functioned normally in non-curfewed areas.
Meanwhile, police claimed to have recovered another dead body from debris of a house that was razed to the ground in a 9 hour long gun-battle between militants and security forces in Maloora Village of Bandipora, 12Kms to the North of Srinagar on Thursday.
The recovery of another dead body has increased the tally of killed militants in Maloora gun-battle to three as dead bodies were recovered from the encounter site yesterday.
“With the recovery of one more militant body the toll in Thursday’s encounter has risen to three,” a police officer said.
All three militants belonged to the Pakistan based outfit Jaish-e-Mohammad.
