Srinagar: Media persons associated with different newspapers and televisions channels held a sit-in outside the venue of All Parties Meeting at SKICC Srinagar to protest the registration of police cases under stringent sections of law against the News X correspondents.
Carrying placards calling for withdrawal of the cases, the media persons wore black badges and sat on a silent sit in to register their protest. A delegation of media persons later met Devinder Singh Rana, the political advisor to the chief minister Omar Abdullah, and informed him about the police cases against the News X.
The delegation strongly called for the withdrawal of all the cases and end to harassment faced by them in discharging their professional duties.
Rana assured the delegation that he would personally look into the matter and sort it out at the earnest. He told the delegation that News X bureau should continue discharging their duties.
Rana also spoke to News X Bureau Chief Suhail Bukhari over telephone and assured him that he would talk to everyone concerned in the government about the case.
Earlier in the morning, media persons belonging to different organizations held a meeting under the banner of Kashmir Journalists Corps (KJC) and discussed the issue of News X and harassment to journalists threadbare.
The meeting resolved that the government should withdraw all cases against the News X and end to the covert and overt harassment of the journalists, who are working under difficult circumstances in Kashmir.
KJC has expressed its gratitude to the members as well as other journalists, who are not the members, for their support and cooperation in the time of need.
